Every year, The Community Foundation for Crawford County accepts nominations for its Spirit of Philanthropy award, which is given to a person or entity who gives back to our community — either with monetary gifts and/or their time and service. This year, they are awarding the Spirit of Philanthropy Award to Bill Fisher. Last year’s award recipients, Crawford County Public Health and Galion City Health Department, presented the 2022 award during the Foundation’s Evening of Philanthropy event held Nov. 3 at The Copper Irons in Bucyrus.

“Bill’s community service embodies the foundation’s tagline, ‘Home is Why’,” said Lisa Workman, the foundation’s president. “After his tenure as a school teacher and director of the Crawford Park District, Bill still gives of his talents to the Crestline and Bucyrus Historical Societies, the Crawford Park District, and the foundation — among others. He’s given so much of his time, now let’s give him our thanks during National Gratitude Month!” Philanthropy is defined as “the desire to promote the welfare of others.”

In addition to the health departments, prior Spirit of Philanthropy award winners include Judi Saurers, the late Dr. Donald Wenner, Libby McPeek, the Timken Foundation and Tom Holtshouse.

Harvey Alston, the coordinator of the Leadership Conference, delivered the morning keynote address about his philosophy on "being the best.” Alston's career has spanned positions from head football coach of Columbus East High School in Ohio in 1968 to assistant director of student financial aid at the university level. As an educator he’s taught English, biology, health, life sciences and math curricula. Over the years, Alston has received numerous state and national awards.

In breakout sessions, students heard from Deb Hult, cofounder of Core Trainings, an internationally recognized human development company, about creating motivating actions. Omari Pearson, founder and president of Passion to Purpose, spoke to students about creating a shared vision. To wrap up the day, Jason Michaels, who was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at age 6 and is an internationally, award-winning sleight-of-hand artist and professional speaker, motivated students to see beyond their challenges and self-imposed limitations and inspired them to take action by living bigger, bolder lives.
