Directions Cares for Classrooms winners announced

TOLEDO — Directions Credit Union has announced 16 winners from the Directions Cares for Classrooms Grant Program Fall 2022.

Directions Cares for Classrooms grant program provides educators with small grants up to $500 each to be used for a variety of projects and materials, including books, software, calculators, math manipulatives, art supplies, audio-visual equipment, lab materials and more.

Directions Credit Union received 112 applications for the fall 2022 grant program. Four of this year’s winners are educators in Richland County:

  • Rachel Jamieson-Knighten, fifth grade ELA (English and Language Arts) teacher from Madison Middle School. The first-year teacher will use the grant to stock her classroom with books, writing folders and journals for her students.

  • Gabriel Dannemiller, fourth grade technology teacher at Bellville Elementary School, will be purchasing the launcher for the Dash add-on for the Dash robot to allow students to develop problem solving skills as well as learning the code related to programming the robot.

  • Rachell Schwall, sixth grade agriculture technology Instructor at Malabar Intermediate. Schwall will be purchasing equipment to make their hydroponics lab functional year-round.

  • Carley Benavides, fourth grade science and social studies at Stingel Elementary. Benavides is using her grant funds to take her students to the Ohio History Center in Columbus.

Directions Cares for Classrooms winter 2023 grant applications will be accepted Jan. 1-31. Educators can apply online at directionscu.org/cares-for-classrooms/.

Women's health forum to be held in Galion

GALION — The Women’s Health Advocacy Association will have a women’s health forum and town hall 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Three Bean Coffee House in Galion. The event will feature a discussion of concerns surrounding women’s health and barriers to receiving proper health care.

Samantha Davis, the group’s founder and president, will facilitate the discussion.

Ashland University hosting Festival of Lights on Sunday

ASHLAND — The 31st annual Festival of Lights, a collaboration between the choral music program and the Office of Christian Ministry at Ashland University, will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, at the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel, located at the intersection of King Road and College Avenue.

The Festival of Lights is part worship service with choral selections and part musical performance with scripture readings and prayers. It will feature three choruses — the Ashland University Choir, the AU Chamber Singers and the Ashland Area Chorus — while liturgists include members of AU administration.

The evening is free and open to the public.
