Free health screenings, mammograms offered on Thursday

Richland Public Health will host the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center of Mansfield and the Pat Kracker Breast Cancer Foundation on Thursday. The health event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot outside of Richland Public Health, at 555 Lexington Ave. in Mansfield.

Richland Public Health activities include:

  • Free blood pressure checks, anemia checks and blood sugar checks done by Public Health Nursing. Cholesterol checks are available for $12 (cash or check only).

  • Free pediatric dental health bags which include a toothbrush, floss and mouthwash for all children up to age 18.

  • Free Deterra drug destruction packets provided by the Richland County Youth Substance Use Coalition.

  • Medical inflatables — an educational walk-through for both children and adults.

The Cleveland Clinic will be providing free mammograms. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome. For questions or to schedule an appointment, call 419-631-0502.

Peace March slated for Saturday in Mansfield

The third annual Kay Day Peace March will be held Saturday in downtown Mansfield. The event honors Geneva "Kay" Smith, a former community organizer and anti-violence advocate who died in December 2019. Organizers of the Peace March include The Kay Day Committee, North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC), City of Mansfield Police Department, Mansfield Community Against Violence (M-CAV), Mansfield Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (MIMA), Restored Visions, Richland County Children Services (RCCS) and We ACT.

Lineup for the march will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the five-way light at Park Avenue and Bowman Street. All participants are asked to bring their peace signs and signs remembering victims of violence. The Peace March will kick off at noon, travling down Park Avenue West to the Central Park Gazebo.

The celebration consists of a free cookout, live entertainment, plus free backpacks and school supplies provided by MIMA, Mansfield NAACP Education Committee, Crossroads Church and other community members.

This year the Kay Day Peace March will honor families in our community whose loved ones were the victims of gun violence. Each family will be presented with a compassion blanket.

Ohio League of Women Voters director to speak to local Democrats

Jen Miller, executive director of the League of Women Voters Ohio, will be the special guest speaker at the regular monthly meeting of the Richland County Democratic Party Thursday at 16 S. Park St., Mansfield.

Jen Miller, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Ohio, expressed the organization's opposition to Ohio Issue 1, which would change how the state constitution is amended. She spoke during a press conference held Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the Steve Young Memorial Lodge #24 Fraternal Order of Police headquarters in Caledonia.

Miller will discuss the importance of voting on Aug, 8 and the ramifications of Issue 1. The League and Miller specifically have had a very prominent role in educating voters on the changes in voting rules and the potential effects of the implementation of Issue 1.
