Granville to honor veterans with Wreaths Across America event Dec. 17

The holidays are upon us. Snow has begun to fall, trees line the Village of Granville, and lights are all around. What better way to brighten the season than a tribute to the Granville veterans with Granville’s Wreaths Across America, sponsored Daughters of the American Revolution Granville Chapter. In this era of division, it is most appropriate to honor a group of individuals that form a bridge that binds us together, a bond like no other, veterans who have dedicated themselves to this country and to Granville. Granville veterans have a distinguished history of service from the Revolutionary War to today with many villagers still serving. Many of the village’s earliest military resident’s graves can be found in the Old Colony and Maple Grove cemeteries. With these wreaths, we honor them.

Wreaths Across America’s goal is to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom. The DAR Granville Chapter felt this was such an important message to bring to the community.

"Two times a year to honor our veterans is not enough. What better season than Christmas, a time of giving and gratitude, to remember and celebrate those who keep us and our beloved country safe," said June McCarthy, a Granville DAR chapter member.

Veterans and members of the military, current and former elected officials, and community members came together for a wreath laying ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville. The event will take place again at noon on Dec. 17, 2022.

The event will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Maple Grove Cemetery at the Veterans Plaza, just inside the gates off East Maple Street in Granville. Please join the Granville DAR, local veterans and Granville Village Manager Herb Koehler and help honor veterans past and present as well as future military.

"The Wreaths Across America ceremony is a wonderful tribute to local service members and their families who sacrificed so much, allowing us to enjoy the coveted freedoms of our great nation," said retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Deborah P. Haven, a Granville DAR chapter member.
