Pavement projects to impact local drivers

The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced the following paving work on U.S. 30 and Ohio 39 beginning Monday, weather-permitting:

  • Striping operations will begin on U.S. 30 eastbound and westbound. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times.

  • Both the eastbound and westbound rest areas, just east of Reed Road, will have daily intermittent closures to allow crews to mill and pave in that area.

  • The U.S. 30 east exit ramp to Reed Road as well as the entrance ramp from Reed Road to U.S. 30 will close Monday for three days for pavement repairs.

  • The U.S. 30 west exit ramp to Reed Road along with the entrance ramp from Reed Road to U.S. 30 will close Thursday for three days for pavement repairs.

  • Ohio 39, from the village of Tiro in Crawford County to just east of Funk Road in Richland County, will have single lane closures for a resurfacing project.

The entire U.S. 30 major rehabilitation project is expected to be completed in October.

The Richland County Engineer's Office has also announced Cook Road, between Griebling and Trimble roads in Washington/Madison Townships, will be closed to through traffic Monday and Tuesday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for roadway repairs.

Several activities are planned at the Gill House in Galion this summer, including a science camp for kids, a historical reenactment and concerts.
Several activities are planned at the Gill House in Galion this summer, including a science camp for kids, a historical reenactment and concerts.

Edison Science Camp for Kids will take place 1-3 p.m. Aug. 5. The event is for children aged 6-16. Participants will be making their own Edison light bulb and learning how the original bulb was developed. There is no charge, but registration is required on or before Aug. 1. Visit the Preserving Galion Facebook page for details.

On Aug. 11 from 4 to 8 p.m., a major milestone in the history of the Gill House will be celebrated when Thomas and Mina Edison "return" to visit. This event commemorates the visit of the Edisons to the house 100 years ago — a day after their attendance at the funeral of President Warren G. Harding. In addition to a visit by reenactors portraying the Edisons, music, food, tours and vintage cars will be at the house.

The popular "Swingin’ On The Porch" concerts by The Shawshank Big Band will take place at 6 p.m. on July 30 and Aug. 27. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Freewill donations are welcome.
