Conservancy district plans annual reservoir drawdown

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Millions of visitors enjoy the lakes of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) on an annual basis to enjoy outdoor recreation ranging from fishing and boating to camping and hiking among a variety of other opportunities. While relaxing on the water or reeling in a big catch are obvious benefits of the lakes, the most important function is to mitigate flooding for the entire Muskingum Watershed region.

To prepare for winter, on an annual basis the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducts a temporary drawdown of the normal pool elevation of the lake levels. The drawdown allows for additional flood storage capacity needed during the winter thaw and spring rains and allows MWCD personnel to access near-shore areas for shoreline stabilization projects and other reservoir maintenance activities.

Drawdown is scheduled for Nov. 1 at Pleasant Hill Lake and Nov. 15 at Charles Mill Lake. The return to normal pool elevation will initiate in February. Normal pool elevations will be obtained in time for the next summer recreation season.

Shoreline projects planned for this winter include the installation of coir log, rock riprap, and native plantings to stabilize approximately 1,900 feet of eroding shoreline on the west shore of the South Peninsula cottage area at Charles Mill Lake.

The main branch of the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library has installed three courtesy mobile device charging stations, each containing six charging storage lockers. Customers can safely place their devices in a free, lockable unit, browse the collection of materials, attend a class or program, and then retrieve their charged items.

In addition, the library has installed a covered picnic table adjacent to the Main Library’s public parking lot. This solar-powered, self-sustaining, shaded space can charge multiple devices simultaneously, day or night. The community can charge mobile phones without cables, and outlets are available for charging laptops and tablets.

A solar-powered picnic table is now adjacent to the main library's public parking lot where multiple devices can be charged.

The introduction of these high-tech charging solutions supports the library’s mission to be a hub for connecting our community to information, resources, and each other.
