Richland County schools awarded safety grants

COLUMBUS — Ohio Gov, Mike DeWine awarded more than $42 million to support physical safety and security upgrades at hundreds of Ohio schools.

A total of 624 schools will receive funding as part of the fifth round of Ohio's K-12 School Safety Grant Program. The new round of funding brings the total number of schools served by the program to 2,789 and the total amount of funding awarded to more than $215 million.

The following Richland County schools are among those receiving grants:

  • Lexington Local: Central Elementary - $44,750; Eastern Elementary - $42,500; Western Elementary - $42,500

  • Lucas Local: Lucas Elementary -$50,000; Lucas Heritage Middle School - $50,000; Lucas High School - $50,000

  • Shelby City: Shelby High School - $50,000

  • St. Mary Catholic School: $100,000

DeWine partnered with the Ohio General Assembly to launch the K-12 School Safety Grant Program in 2021. The program was created to help schools pay for physical security expenses such as new security cameras, public address systems, automatic door locks, visitor badging systems, and exterior lighting.

State controlling board approves funding for North Central State, two other Richland projects

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Controlling Board Monday released funds for the First Responders Safety and Training Center located in Shelby, announced State Rep. Marilyn John (R-Richland County).

The Board approved the release of $60,880 to be used by North Central State College for the First Responders Safety and Training project. The project is for basic renovations to the Kehoe Center in Shelby, which houses the criminal justice and police academy programs offered by the college.

Separately, the Controlling Board approved funding for two more local projects: $650,000 from the Regional 166 Direct Loan Program for the construction of a 10,000-square-foot manufacturing building on a 10.24-acre site in Mansfield and $20,280 for lawn care services at the 179th Airlift Wing.

Mansfield to celebrate Arbor Day on Friday

Mayor Tim Theaker announced the National Arbor Day Foundation named the City of Mansfield a Tree City USA for the 28th consecutive year. To receive the award, a community and its Shade Tree Commission must demonstrate a commitment to implementing a sound urban forestry policy.

The Mansfield Shade Tree Commission will celebrate the designation with a special Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. Friday at the Buckeye Imagination Museum, 175 W. Third St. The Shade Tree Commission will plant a purple thundercloud plum tree, donated by Alta Florist & Greenhouse.
