Briefs: Silent Watch, Walk to End Alzheimer's, Mansfield Symphony, Madison H.S. luncheon

News in brief

Silent Watch seeks volunteers

Silent Watch will draw attention to veteran suicide awareness from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 50 Park Avenue East. The group is looking for volunteers to stand in silence for 20 minutes. Anyone interested in doing so should call Michele at 419-266-5315.

According to information provided by the group, 22 veterans take their own lives each day. Silent Watch also is hoping to help veterans with post traumatic stress disorder get their SGB injection. Silent Watch, a nonprofit, will cover the cost of the injection when funds are available.

Currently, the injection is not available in Ohio, so Silent Watch sends or transports veterans to Annapolis, Maryland. More information about SGB can be found on the Silent Watch web page at silentwatch.org, the group’s Facebook page or ThestellateInstitute.com.

Silent Watch will hold similar ceremonies on Sept. 24 in Ashland and Wooster.

Area residents invited to join Walk to End Alzheimer's

The Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio is inviting residents from Richland, Crawford, Ashland and Knox counties to participate in the North Central Ohio Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the North Central State College Health Sciences Building in Mansfield on Saturday.

Check-in begins at 9 a.m. with an opening and promise garden ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by the walk.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease — a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

In Ohio alone, there are 220,000 people aged 65 and older living with the disease and 493,000 caregivers. The number of Ohioans living with Alzheimer's is expected to increase to 250,000 by 2025.
