Briefs: This is Winter Safety Awareness Week

Ohioans urged to prepare for winter

COLUMBUS — Ohioans are likely to experience wetter-than-average conditions in the Great Lakes this winter, according to NOAA’s U.S. Winter Outlook released by the Climate Prediction Center — a division of the National Weather Service. There is a 75% chance of a weak La Niña, which returns for the third consecutive winter, that may create a particular storm track and temperature pattern across the U.S.

The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA) recognizes Nov, 13-19 as Winter Safety Awareness Week. OCSWA recommends several winter preparedness tips, such as planning for power outages by having batteries and other alternative power sources.

Prepare winter emergency supply kits for the home and vehicle that include flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, coats, hats, gloves, a battery-operated radio/weather radio, first aid kit, cell phone and charger, and enough nonperishable food and water (one gallon per person, per day) to sustain every household member for several days. Store food, bottled water and supplies for your pets, as well.

Schools in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC) have established a student-athlete exchange program in an effort to promote good sportsmanship, the sharing of ideas, and student leadership. Each year, the MOAC schools select a partner district with whom they “exchange” student-athletes. The district then selects eight underclassmen who demonstrate leadership potential to visit their partner school for a day.

Galion selected five juniors and three sophomores to participate in the exchange — Wyatt Estep, Cameron Eckert, Miranda Stone, Gabe Ivy, Ce Ce Campbell, Braxton Prosser, Maddie Wegesin and Max Albert. Programs represented include volleyball, basketball, softball, swimming, track, cheerleading, cross country, marching band, baseball, wrestling, soccer and football.
