Brighten A Christmas: Grandmother with cancer raising 3 grandkids on her own

The 50-year-old grandmother in Brighten A Christmas case No. 9 is raising three grandchildren despite having cancer.

"She took in her three grandchildren with open arms, knowing the challenges she would endure," a caseworker wrote. "If it means she can be the caregiver for her grandchildren, she will fearlessly accept any challenge.

"She has no social supports and provides for her grandchildren on her own. Since she is unable to work, financial stress is a daily barrier."

The woman has saved just enough money to provide housing, but there is very little for anything else.

"Her wish this Christmas is to be able to meet their basic needs and provide them with a loving and caring environment," the caseworker wrote.

Donors who want to help this family may contribute cash, checks or gift cards at any of the nine Richland County locations of Mechanics Bank. People who want to donate specifically to case No. 9 should note that on the envelope.

The News Journal launched Brighten A Christmas on Dec. 7, 1947, as a series of appeals encouraging groups, families and others to adopt those in need or contribute to purchase food baskets, Christmas trees, clothing and other items.

Brighten A Christmas is in its 76th campaign.
