A Navy veteran is down on his luck in Brighten A Christmas case No. 10.

He served his country for 15 years and works at a local department store. He and his wife have separated, causing a financial burden for the family and anxiety for their four children, who are between the ages of 12 and 16.

The family struggles daily with basic needs, making Christmas difficult this year.

Employees from the Reach Inc. Center for Autism nominated the family for Brighten A Christmas.

"They are very deserving of any and all extra help they can get during this holiday season," they wrote. "(Boys) are a pleasure to have in class, and we would love to see a smile on their faces."

Those who want to help the family in case No. 10 can contribute cash, checks or gift cards at any of the nine locations of Mechanics Bank. People who want to donate to a particular case should note the case on the envelope.

Barb Stamper, a branch manager at the Mechanics Bank on Ashland Road, is the designated shopper. She takes donations and buys the gifts, along with household products.

Gifts will be distributed Dec. 16-17. People are asked to make donations by Dec. 10. It is especially important for people who plan to mail donations to get them in early, given the issue with mail delivery last year.
