Brightline service disrupted for three hours from Fort Lauderdale to Miami

Brightline service between Fort Lauderdale and Miami was interrupted Thursday morning for several hours after a bridge over the New River malfunctioned.

“Brightline has resumed normal operations between all South Florida stations,” the company announced on Twitter about 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The company had announced three hours earlier that its train service was stopped from Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami.

Until then, Brightline trains had operated with only “limited service northbound” between the stations in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach, the company said.

Brightline said the service interruption was due to “an operating issue at the New River Bridge in Fort Lauderdale.”

The New River Bridge was “malfunctioning” Thursday morning and undergoing repairs, Fort Lauderdale police announced Thursday.

“Marine traffic is impacted and boaters should expect delays in the area,” the agency tweeted. “Vehicular traffic in the area is not impacted at this time.”

Repairs were ongoing Thursday afternoon, but “the bridge has been stabilized enough to allow train traffic,” said Detective Ali Adamson, a spokesperson for the Fort Lauderdale police department.

Marine traffic is still impacted on Friday morning, with the bridge remaining locked in the down position.
