LANTANA — A southbound Brightline train hit and killed a man in Lantana on Saturday afternoon.

The crash between the train and pedestrian unfolded at about 2 p.m. near the intersection of South Dixie Highway and West Central Boulevard.

Lantana Police Sgt. Constantine Laganas said no further information was available Saturday afternoon.

Last month, Brightline trains were involved in at least four collisions during a one-week period in Palm Beach County.

On Feb. 19, a Brightline train killed a man who walked onto the tracks in Delray Beach, near Gulfstream Boulevard and North Old Dixie Highway.

Days earlier, on Feb. 16, rescue crews used the "jaws of life" to rescue an injured 55-year-old man after a train crashed into his car in Lake Worth Beach. The driver had navigated around a stopped car and drove onto the tracks.

That followed a wreck on Feb. 15, when a woman drove her car through the dead end of a street and onto the railroad tracks near Southeast 10th Street and South Swinton Boulevard in Delray Beach. The woman and her baby escaped before a train collided with their car.

And on Feb. 13, a Brightline train hit a car and killed at least one person inside the vehicle. Authorities released few details about the wreck in Lake Worth Beach.

Saturday's death appears to be the 60th fatality involving Brightline trains in the rail line's five-year history, many of them motorists, pedestrians or bicyclists who either misjudged the trains' speeds or ignored lowered gates, sounds or other warnings.

"None of these incidents have been the fault of the Brightline system," Ben Porritt, Brightline's senior vice president for corporate affairs, said last month. "The railroad is safe. It is behavior that we need to continue to educate and change around these railroad tracks."
