Brightline train, vehicle collide in downtown Jensen Beach

JENSEN BEACH — No one was injured after a Sunday collision involving a Brightline train and a vehicle, officials said Monday.

The crash happened about 6:50 p.m. at the downtown Jensen Beach railroad crossing, according to Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Christine Christofek.

The crash at the crossing on Northeast Jensen Beach Boulevard appeared to be “minor,” Martin County Fire Rescue spokesperson Cory Pippin stated.

Martin County Sheriff's Lt. Todd Schimelfanick said those in the vehicle “weren't too familiar with the area, kind of got caught up in the roundabout going the wrong way.”

“Once they tried to back out of the intersection, the arms went down,” Schimelfanick said. “So they kind of got stuck in between.”

He said the occupants, two women, got out of their Nissan automobile.

“Their vehicle wasn't all the way on the tracks, but it was just enough to where it got clipped,” he said.

Schimelfanick said there were no signs of impairment.

Pippin stated the two people in the vehicle refused medical treatment.

He said the crash caused a temporary closure of the road.
