Brighton Cooperative Preschool could close without help

BRIGHTON — Brighton Cooperative Preschool, founded in 1967, is at risk of closing; and the organization's board of directors is reaching out to ask for help.

On Friday, Aug. 18, the school sent a press release to local media, asking alumni and families with young children in the community to consider donating to keep the preschool open for future generations in Livingston County.

The nonprofit is struggling after COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns. BCP has existed for decades, housed in various buildings throughout the community. It provides high quality preschool at a low cost, it says, with parent involvement required.

BCP offers preschool programs to three and four-year-olds. Children attend school from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on different days of the week. According to the board of directors, the approach is a gentle way for families to ease into the routine and structure of school.

BCP is parent-run with support from a program director and licensed teacher. The teacher works with each child and has kindergarten readiness in mind. The cooperative is for families that want their children to experience school and socialize without large class sizes and other daycare requirements.

The current board of directors, according to the release, is facing tough choices. The history and spirit of the co-op is strong, but enrollments have been down since families changed the way they educate and socialize their young children in the wake of the pandemic.
