New Brighton gallery hosts sculpture exhibition

NEW BRIGHTON − The Society of Sculptors, Pittsburgh will showcase its sculpture talents with an exhibition at the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton.

The exhibition's opening event is 1-3 p.m. Sunday. Displayed sculptures will remain at the Merrick with free admission until June 11.

"There are realistic figurines and busts, and there are abstract pieces as well. There is also a wall with some hanging sculptures," Laurie Fillinger of the Merrick's Art Committee, said. "The variety is impossible to describe. You need to wander through it."

The Society of Sculptors' high-tech display makes sure each piece has a QR code beside it that can be scanned onto a cell phone, linking to information about that particular piece and the artist.

The Society of Sculptors was created in 1935, and is one of the nation's oldest groups promoting sculpture, locally, regionally and nationally. The society's goal is to encourage and nurture new talent in the field of sculpture.

The Merrick's gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.

Most of the represented sculptors will be at the May 22 opening, where there will be refreshments downstairs in the Edwardian room, with access to the Merrick's garden and porch.
