Kudos to the folks who come up with the matchups for the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase in Trenton.

All three Livingston County teams were involved in one-goal decisions in their first games in the annual gathering of the top teams in Michigan and surrounding states.

All three also happened to lose, which is the risk teams sign up for when they enter the showcase.

Hartland came the closest to emerging victorious, blowing a two-goal third-period lead Friday night in a 4-3 shootout loss to Cleveland St. Ignatius at Kennedy Recreation Center.

Brighton lost 1-0 to Lake Forest Academy of Illinois on Friday, while Howell lost 3-2 to Rockford on Thursday.

Hartland took a 3-1 lead in the second period on goals by Luca DiGirolamo at 9:50 and Jacob Lewis at 12:34.

St. Ignatius, a traditional power in Ohio, got within a goal when Dario Piazza scored 41 seconds into the third period. Jack Geffert scored with 3:04 remaining to tie the game.

Lucas Henry scored on Hartland’s first shot in the best-of-3 shootout. Brandon Getz tied it on St. Ignatius’ third shot, sending the shootout to sudden death.

After each team missed twice, Sam Elwell scored for St. Ignatius and Nick Halonen was denied on Hartland’s last shot.

The Eagles killed three penalties in the third period, including a five-minute major for checking from behind against defensemen Braden Pietila.

“Granted, they didn’t score a power-play goal, but you lose momentum when you’re undisciplined and take penalties,” Hartland coach Rick Gadwa said. “We did that. We had a five-minute major with Braden there. We had an undisciplined penalty later that we just didn’t need. I liked where we were at that point. You could see the momentum shift when you do things like that.

“I wasn’t happy with our inability to finish a game again up two goals. That being said, I did like a lot of what I saw. I like where the team’s at. We talk about steps on a ladder; they’ve got a couple steps to go still.”

Ian Evans gave Hartland a 1-0 lead at 2:03 of the first.

Brighton goalie Levi Pennala made 22 saves in a 1-0 loss to Lake Forest Academy during the MIHL Showcase in Trenton.
