Brighton has medalist contender after first round of state golf tournament

Brighton is third out of 18 teams after the first round of the state Division 1 golf tournament and junior Andrew Daily is in contention for the individual championship.

The Bulldogs shot 310, trailing Ann Arbor Skyline (296) and Detroit Catholic Central (301).

Daily shot 1-under-par 71 Friday at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, putting him fourth individually, two strokes behind co-leaders Ieuan Jones of Ann Arbor Skyline and Richie Kuhn of Waterford.

Daily had six birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.

Junior Winston Lerch and sophomore Levi Pennala shot 79, junior Matt Doyle shot 81 and sophomore Riley Morton shot 83 for Brighton.

The final round will be played Saturday.

Brighton can finish in the top three for only the fourth time in program history. The Bulldogs were second in Class B in 1967, third in Class B in 1970 and third in Class A in 1996.

The Bulldogs qualified for the state tournament by winning a fifth-man tie-breaker over Novi for the third and final spot in the regional at Salem Hills Golf Club in Northville.
