Brighton moving closer to KLAA West wrestling championship

After beating third-ranked Hartland last Wednesday, Brighton is going about the formality of finishing off the KLAA West wrestling championship.

The eighth-ranked Bulldogs went 4-0 in a forfeit-filled KLAA dual event Sunday at Howell to improve to 5-0 in the division.

Brighton still has duals left against Novi and Plymouth to complete its KLAA West schedule.

Brighton beat Howell 48-27, Canton 48-9, Northville 57-12 and Salem 54-12.

There were 22 forfeits and nine double forfeits in the four duals. Only three of 14 matches against Canton were contested on the mat.

Jackson Johnson (17-5), Zak Knapp (22-2), Aiden Smith (23-1), Antonio Nauss (23-4) and Travis Richardson (22-3) won all four of their matches for Brighton. Colin Jewell (17-6) went 3-0.

Hartland won all three of its duals in lopsided fashion, 75-6 over Canton, 76-6 over Northville and 84-0 over Salem. Hartland won 23 matches by forfeits.

Jake Gillespie, Liam Wittanen, Ethan Kinch, Gabe Cappellano and Chase Kern won two matches each with pins.

Howell beat Canton, Northville and Salem while going 3-1. Will Stewart and Connor Wallace won all four of their matches for the Highlanders.
