Lubbock Habitat for Humanity officially announced the Lubbock Habitat 2022 Blitz Build on Thursday at their construction Site located at 404 N. Guava Avenue.

The event officially kicks off on Labor Day, but months of planning and preparation are needed ahead of the event aimed at providing housing to those in need.

In the 2022 Blitz Build, Habitat for Humanity will be attempting to build four houses in only 12 days.

During the news conference, Lubbock Habitat for Humanity also announced their partnership with the Blitz Home Builders Organization.

Each year, this organization selects a city to assist with their Blitz efforts. Lubbock Habitat was selected for 2022.

“Blitz home builders is a loose-knit group of builders who will travel from around the United States to come to Lubbock, Texas this fall," said Steve Cook, a Blitz Home Builders representative. “We expect somewhere near 80 to 100 people will pay their own way to get here, pay their own lodging, feed themselves just to build homes for people who are in need.”

This organization began in 1998 and has continually grown over the years. The group will send skilled workers to Lubbock to make the Blitz a success.

Lubbock Habitat Executive Director Christy Reeves said, "We are beyond thankful that we have an opportunity to partner with the Blitz Home Builders. The group was originally coming in 2020 but had to cancel due to COVID-19. Lubbock Habitat applied again, and we were selected for 2022. The help will make a tremendous difference.”

Reeves said, “We built three houses during the 2021 Blitz, but COVID issues made it impossible to complete the homes entirely in thirteen days. With the Blitz Home Builders on board this year, we hope to get these houses finished in twelve days or come closer than ever.”

Volunteers, sponsorships, and donations of building supplies, services, food, and tools are needed for the 2022 Blitz Build, Reeves said.

“It can be individuals, companies, organizations - anybody who would like to participate, Reeves said. “We need to fund the construction of these four houses ahead of time.”

Homeowners who are being selected right now will pay for them with a no-interest affordable mortgage, she said.

According to the Habitat for Humanity website, each local Habitat’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria: the applicant’s level of need, their willingness to partner with Habitat and their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan.
