Sunflower season is right around the corner as the bright yellow flower blooms in June.

Sol Flowers field on Bradley Road

Danielle Roberts was always a backyard gardener and started a sunflower patch for her daughters make extra money in the summer.

When they went to college, Roberts kept on what they started and gave the money back to the community.

That eventually expanded into a 10-acre larger plot with the help of a farmer.

"Every year has just seemed to have grown exponentially," she said. "Over the six years, we are beyond $100,000 in the donations that we've brought in for Sol Flowers."

Roberts sends donations to Foothills Community Foundation. The past two years, the funds have been allocated to different organizations with three at the top:

  • Area 14 Special Olympics

  • Free Clinic

  • Bridge Center Recovery

To visit the field at 150 Bradley Road and take photos is free, but visitors can purchase sunflowers after they bloom in June and July.

"Everything lined up just perfectly for us to be able to do this," Roberts said. "We do now consider ourselves farmers but at the time we did not. We learned everything really from scratch."
