Bring your favorite animal to a pet fair in the park

Oct. 20—VERNON — The nonprofit Friends of the Saxony Dog Park, 66 West St., will have its first pet fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m The rain date is Sunday.

The fair will feature a special raffle of a 43-inch smart TV, plus raffles of prizes donated by local businesses, including Farm Car Care, Velvet Touch, Dog Essentials, Dog Bone, PetSmart, Moore's Automotive, Jefferson Fry, and others.

Vendors will include JennyAnyCrafts, A&C Custom Designs, Companion Insurance Agency, Bone Appetite, No Stress Realtor Jess, Swanky Suds, Grannie Doggie Treats, and Lia's Blankets.

Live music will be provided by Second Helping, and food will be sold, including chocolate bars by the Vernon Spare Time Juniors League.

Strong Farm Harvest Festival

VERNON — Strong Family Farm, 274 West St., will have its 8th annual Harvest Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free; parking will cost $2.

The day will include a petting zoo, crafters, food trucks, live music by the Still Pickin' Band, chicken parade, canning demonstration, local children's book authors, apple pie contest, country farm store, and more.

Food sale and crafts

STAFFORD — Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Stafford Springs section of Stafford, will have a Harvest Sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be baked goods such as nut and poppy rolls (kolach), homemade stuffed cabbage (halupki), handmade crafts, a gift basket raffle, lunch cafe, pumpkin patch, and more.

Barnyard tag sale

VERNON — There will be a tag sale to benefit animal welfare Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the barn and barnyard at 711 Bolton Road (opposite Wildwood Road), weather permitting.

All proceeds will be donated to White Coat Waste Project (WhiteCoatWaste.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to stopping wasteful and cruel taxpayer-funded experiments on dogs, monkeys, cats, and other animals.

Items for sale will include linens, dishes, books, costume jewelry, and more; many items were donated by the Just Like New Consignment shop.

Family science night at STCC

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Technical Community College will host a Family Science Night that concludes its STEM Week celebration Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Scibelli Hall, Building 2, on the STCC campus.

Among the highlights will be science "edutainer" Mike Davis doing demonstrations of science experiments and science fun facts.

There will also be hands-on activities, including music, games, food, prizes, and giveaways.

Living history

EAST HARTFORD — The East Hartford Public Library will host Tammy Denease portraying Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly in a Living History program Sunday at 2 p.m.

Keckly was the important, but little-known woman who was formerly enslaved, and became a successful author, civil activist, and seamstress in Washington, D.C. She was best known as the personal dressmaker and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln.

Turkey shoot

EAST WINDSOR — East Windsor Lions will have its major fundraiser, turkey shoots, every Sunday through Nov. 20 on Route 140, at 37 North Road.

Ticket sales start at 8:15 a.m. The target shooting will go from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or sooner, depending on the number of participants.

Tickets are $2.75 and more, depending on the round prize. The prizes are frozen turkeys, hams, fresh beef roasts, cash, and gift certificates.

Guns and ammo are provided as part of the cost of the ticket.

Document family history

WINDSOR — Genealogist Sandra Taitt-Eaddy will lead virtual sessions focused on African American and Caribbean genealogy.

Windsor Historical Society will host these events via Zoom today and Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

Taitt-Eaddy's work has earned the Barbados Consul General's "Change Award" and has been featured on PBS's genealogy series "Finding Your Roots," hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Mapping family history

The Jewish Genealogical Society will host a program by genealogist Alex Calzareth, "Mapping Your Family History: How to Create a Customized Google Map," on Sunday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. via webinar.

Calzareth focuses on southwest Germany, the Czech Republic, and southern Italy. He is a board member on Reclaim The Records, webmaster for the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island, and director of the JewishGen GerSIG.

The event is free for members, $5 for non-members.
