Bringing the outside in: Lubbock landscaper opens Paint Rock Coffee Co. with garden style

Lubbock's latest coffee shop, Paint Rock Coffee Co., brings the outdoors in with greenery and flowers at every turn. This garden theme stems partially from the owner's other career, landscaping.

When Tommy Bonnen, a self-proclaimed "serial entrepreneur" and landscaper, decided to get into the coffee business, he wanted to make something unique.

"I thought, I'm just going to make a bougie coffee shop," he said. "And I love the flowers, the decoration and bringing the outside landscape stuff in."

The floral theme at 2002 Broadway continues from the ceiling to a mural with cats and flowers. One focal point in an area with four hanging wicker-like chairs that have greenery entwined. Chandeliers, wood tables and velvet furniture also stand out in the shop.

As for the coffee, the shop uses locally roasted Tierras Planas for the menu. Bonnen's favorite is The Swindler. Mikayla Vicenik, a barista, recommends the NB Queen and Pauline Tucker, manager, enjoys the Hibiscus Tea.

Customers can order food from Miguel's, which will be brought to the coffee shop. There are plans to make sandwiches and baked goods in the future.

"It'll be a good place to come in and get a quick sandwich and coffee," Bonnen said.

As for the name, Bonnen initially planned to open a location at 112 E. San Saba St. in Paint Rock before the Lubbock spot. Paint Rock's shop will open in the next few months with a drive-thru, coffee, beer, sandwiches and baked goods.
