'It brings everyone together': Scituate celebrates return of St. Patrick's Day Parade

SCITUATE – Hours before the St. Patrick's Day Parade began, a palpable excitement was already in the air.

Crowds gathered at the shuttle buses, sports teams rallied, children beamed with anticipation and the New Magnolia Jazz Band played trumpets and trombones. By 1 p.m., First Parish Road was a sea of green.

"(I'm) looking forward to be back after two years of no parade ... being able to throw candy and shake hands with people," state Sen. Patrick O'Connor, R-Weymouth, said.

Danielle Robertson, a Scituate native, attended the parade with her children. This year, her daughter was in the parade performing with her dance school, Etoile. Her son has walked it with baseball teams and Boy Scouts.

"It brings everyone together," Robertson said. "It's something to look forward to and it's just a really nice event. Scituate is known as being the Irish Riviera. It's a great way to celebrate."

The parade was a family affair for Stephen McGrath, a Scituate resident of 40 years who has watched the parade a few times. He was with his wife, granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law, who traveled from North Andover to watch.

"It's just good for everybody ... especially now in these times. Everybody comes out and enjoys themselves," McGrath said as the Scituate High School football team celebrated on a flatbed truck.

Pam and Eleanor Brdya came from Torrington, Connecticut, to walk the parade in Colonial attire.

'Wonderful to be back': Mayflower Church Chowder Fest returns in Kingston

Children lined the parade route collecting candy thrown to the crowd.

"The kids would say (their favorite part is) the candy," Robertson said. "And for me, it's just running into people, seeing faces I haven't seen in a while."
