Levittown mom charged in fatal Bristol Borough shooting of husband at wharf

A Bristol Township mother of four has been arrested and charged with fatally shooting her estranged husband multiple times during a confrontation in Lions Park along the Delaware River wharf in Bristol Borough on Tuesday.

Bristol Police Chief Joe Moors said earlier Tuesday that there was no danger to the public and a suspect is in custody.

Sammar Kahn, 40, of Freedom Lane in Bristol Township, is charged with first-degree murder homicide, possessing an instrument of a crime and reckless endangering. She was held without bail in the death of Faisal Iqbal, 39, who police say she shot multiple times at the riverfront park shortly after 11 a.m.

As she was led into the district court Tuesday evening, Khan covered her face. At her arraignment, she asked district Judge Frank Peranteau for an interpreter for her future court appearances, but confirmed that she understood what the judge was saying to her.

Kahn told the judge she had been working part-time at a Dunkin' Donuts for the last three months. Police told the judge she has no prior criminal history.

When the judge asked if Khan had any questions, she replied, "I need a lawyer."

After the shooting, Khan allegedly told police the couple was at the park to discuss their relationship and the meeting did not go well, and she killed Iqbal. The gun, a 9mm Smith and Wesson, was recovered, according to police.

The couple's children, including one who was at the park at the time of the shooting, were taken into custody by Bucks County Children and Youth after the shooting, Bristol Detective Bill Davis said.

According to witnesses, the couple was talking in an area near the water when Khan was observed to be speaking loudly in a foreign language. A pop sound was heard, according to court documents, and Iqbal began to wrestle with Khan at which time additional gunshots were heard, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Iqbal and Kahn subsequently walked up from the water toward the parking lot area where Iqbal told at least one witness to call 911.

Khan then shot Iqbal two times with him collapsing in a grassy area between the water and parking lot, court documents said. While he was on the ground, she allegedly raised the gun at Iqbal and shot him twice in the torso.

Khan then moved the gun to the area of her husband's head and fired an additional shot, according to authorities.

Police said that Iqbal had visible gunshot wounds on his torso and head. Khan was taken into custody at the scene and and had blood on her clothing. At her arraignment, Khan was wearing what appeared to be surgical scrubs with booties on her feet.

According to a police detective, a Bristol, Borough police officer interviewed a man reported to be Khan’s boyfriend after the shooting. He said he had been dating the woman for over a year and that her relationship with her husband was "tumultuous."

The man reported receiving a phone call shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday from Khan where she allegedly admitted to killing Faisal and asked him to come to the wharf and pick up her son.

As police investigated Tuesday, a wide swath of the park was cordoned off with police tape near the Harriet Tubman statue as bystanders gathered in the area.

More: Bristol father charged in death of baby son. What he told police

This is the second death investigated by law enforcement in the small riverfront town in less than a week. Previously, the last murder in the riverfront borough was in 2016, police said.

Last week, police responded to a home on Radcliffe Street for the report of an unresponsive infant. The 4-month-old baby's father would be charged with his death as police alleged the child's bruises and injuries were "indicative of a battered child."

The community came together Friday night to remember the baby.

Tyler Sullivan, 30, was arraigned Thursday morning on charges of homicide and two counts aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. He is being held without bail.
