Bristol Township paves way for new Popeye's on Veteran's Highway

The developer of a planned drive-thru Popeye's in Bristol Township was granted variances by the zoning board recently to build on a little over half an acre of land at 1111 Veteran's Highway, also known as Route 413.

"Our proposal is to build an approximately 2,300-square-foot building that is going to be used as a Popeye's fast food restaurant," said Begley, Carlin & Mandio, LLP attorney Bryce MgGuigan during the hearing. "The restaurant will have a drive-thru that will have two separate drive-thru ordering stations with the ability to stack 11 spaces, and we are going to have 20 designated parking spaces as well."

The New Hope-based firm is serving as counsel for Bensalem-based developer Rahmani Enterprises Corp. Proprietor Nazif Rahmani testified that his company also operates three additional Popeye's drive-thru locations in Bucks County.

The variances requested by the developer relate to landscaping, parking and product off-loading and restocking.

When questioned regarding potential deliveries being made during the daytime on Veterans Highway, Rahmani said the deliveries are scheduled overnight, but couldn't guarantee that logistical issues beyond his control could lead to daytime drop-offs on the busy road near the Interstate 95 interchange.

"We have two suppliers; one is primary for chicken and the second is primarily for boxes, and neither use 18-wheeler trucks, and they come during the night," Rahmani said. "They have a drop key and normally it's anywhere between 11 p.m. and four in the morning."

The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Zoning Hearing Board Chairman James McMahon pressed Rahmani on the issue of midday deliveries blocking traffic on Veteran's Highway.

"At no point am I going to ride by there and see a truck on Veteran's Highway being unloaded at your restaurant?" McMahon asked. "I've seen cars being loaded and unloaded on Veteran's Highway."

"I can't say that because there's obviously delays, but mainly they are scheduled to come at night," Rahmani said. "But there are times they would come during the day, but that's something that's just beyond our control."

McMahon said that Rahmani will "have to control that," noting that is the reason to have the offload parking and zoning.
