It’s always a great day when Britain can boast of its achievements and now we can add lazy children to music, fashion and culture.

That’s right, a new study of 17,000 eight-year-olds from 16 countries has found that children in the UK are pretty much the laziest in the world.

The sample of nearly 1,000 children from England showed that less than half (47%) helped out with household chores when asked by their parents.

This compares with 70% of Romanian children, 69% of Algerians and 68% of Polish youngsters who claimed to do them when asked.

On top of that, the survey also found primary school children in Britain spent less time on their homework than children from other countries.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of the parenting social network Channel Mum, said she wasn’t surprised by the results.

She said: “We know our kids should be helping more and that we should be guiding them to cooperate in the family unit but we’re all so busy and it takes time to train a child.

“To avoid an inevitable row, it’s actually quicker and easier - in the short term - to do it yourself.

“If we had more time then we would insist on our children seeing through household chores.”

She added: “We should really be putting household chores up there with manners and social behaviour, in terms of what we’re teaching our children.

“If only we had more time.”

The study, conducted by the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York, also found that Brit youngsters ranked 13th out of 16 countries for overall life satisfaction - ahead of only South Korea, Nepal and Ethiopia.
