Britney Spears vowed to “never return to the music industry” as she quashed rumours that she could soon be back in the studio.

The pop star described recent reports that she was getting ready to record a 10th album as “trash”.

“Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash!!!,” she wrote on Instagram

“They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry!!!”

Celebrity news website Page Six and The Sun had claimed that the 42 year old was lining up fellow pop stars Charli XCX and Julia Michaels as collaborators for a new album.

Rolling Stone also quoted an industry source who said that “management” was trying to get Spears “excited for the music”.

“As of right now, she’s not actively in recording but they’re getting [songs] done to present to her,” the source said.

But Spears dismissed the speculation as “random”, saying she only produced music for “fun”.

She revealed that she had ghostwritten more than 20 songs for other artists in the past two years.

“When I write I write for fun or I write for other people !!!... I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way,” the singer, known for chart-topping songs including Oops!... I Did It Again and Toxic, said.

Her Instagram post was accompanied by an image of the 17th-century painting, Salome Bearing The Head Of St John the Baptist, by Italian baroque artist Guido Reni.

Spears has not produced a full album since 2016’s Glory, leading fans to clamour for her return.

In August 2022, she released her first music since being freed from a conservatorship overseen by her father, which controlled almost every aspect of her life.

The duet with Elton John – named Hold Me Closer – came after a six-year hiatus.

Last year, Spears published her memoir, The Woman in Me,  detailing her life during her 13-year conservatorship.

The singer wrote that despite her collaboration with Sir Elton, “pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment”.

“It’s time for me not to be someone who other people want; it’s time to actually find myself,” she said.
