Britney Spears' Dad Said to Receive $16,000 Per Month as Conservator

On July 26, Britney Spears’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart submitted new documents to the court that allege the singer’s father and conservator, Jamie Spears, has been “paying himself” a $16,000 monthly salary for the past 12 years – Insider reported shortly after the filings.

"Mr. Spears has profited handsomely from his daughter's conservatorship. By way of illustration only, since at least 2009, Mr. Spears has been paying himself $16,000 per month from Ms. Spears's Estate, $2,000 more than he has allotted to Ms. Spears. Mr. Spears also pays himself an additional $2,000 per month for office expenses — again, from Ms. Spears's Estate," Rosengart’s court-submitted documents reportedly read. 

Rosengart’s filings also claim that, on top of the $16,000 a month, “Mr. Spears has paid himself a share of the revenues generated by Ms. Spears's performances.” The documents state that he reportedly earned 1.5% of the gross revenues generated by Britney through performances and merch sales, including her “Britney: Piece of Me” Las Vegas residency.

Per the new documents, the gross revenue from the residency — which lasted from late 2013 until late 2017 — alone is reported to be approximately $137.7 million, excluding merchandise. (In 2018, Billboard reported the residency, which featured 248 shows in total, had sold 916,184 tickets, amounting to $137.7M in overall gross.) Per Rosengart’s claims, "Mr. Spears’s cut from that residency is estimated to be at least $2.1 million. He also received a 2.95% commission on Ms. Spears's gross revenues on her 2011 'Femme Fatale' tour, which yielded him an estimated $500,000.” 

“Although it is common for managers, agents, and other industry professionals to receive a percentage of an artists' earnings, Mr. Spears is none of those. He is a conservator and, as a conservator, his role is to be burdened by, rather than benefit from, the conservatorship,” Rosengart’s documents also reportedly read. 

Aside from the financial claims, Rosengart also filed a direct petition to have Mr. Spears removed from the conservatorship agreement. Insider notes this is the first time this has happened formally, despite Britney’s many pleas during her previous hearings. During Britney’s last court hearing, which took place on July 14, newly-appointed Rosengart had asked Mr. Spears to voluntarily step down as Britney’s conservator, which his lawyer, Vivian Thoreen, turned down. Rosengart also then announced he would officially file a petition to call for his removal. Rosengart’s now-formal petition is said to be backed by statements from Britney's mother, Lynne Spears, and her personal conservator, Jodi Montgomery.

The next hearing in the conservatorship case is scheduled to take place on September 29.
