The “best bite” award that gave Ukiah the title of “heritage hero” was determined by an audience vote and awarded for its smoked heritage beef short rib served with bibb lettuce, yuzu pickle and Kyoto Carolina sauce.

“We kind of forgot that it was a competition for the best part of the day,” said Chef Michael Lewis. “We were just excited to hang out on a beautiful farm and make some great food and be able to share it with a bunch of people.”

Even though he hadn’t expected a win, Lewis was happy his team got the recognition they deserve.

“They were definitely very stoked, very proud to be able to put that little piece of wood on the shelf at the front door,” Lewis said. "They’re very excited, and I was super proud of the team and all the hard work that they put in.”

Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse is located at 121 Biltmore Ave. in Asheville. Its hours are 5-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5-9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
