Broadway smash musical 'Wicked' set to return to the Orpheum Theatre this summer

Jan. 5—"Wicked," currently the fifth-longest-running show in Broadway history, will return to the Twin Cities this summer for a run from July 27 through Aug. 28 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Minneapolis.

Ticket details will be announced next month when Hennepin Theatre Trust reveals its entire 2022-23 season. Tickets are currently available only for groups of 10 or more. For details, see minneapolis.broadway.com/shows.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, "Wicked" is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," which tells the story of Oz through the perspective of the witches Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (whose name later changes to Glinda the Good Witch).

"Wicked" debuted on Broadway in 2003 with a cast that included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Joel Grey as the Wizard. It went on to win three Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy for its original cast album. In 2017, it surpassed "The Phantom of the Opera" as Broadway's second-highest grossing musical, behind "The Lion King." The first "Wicked" tour kicked off in 2005 and the musical has since been successfully staged in more than 100 cities in 16 countries.

A long-delayed film adaptation is set to begin shooting this summer with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo playing Glinda and Elphaba and Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians," "In the Heights") directing.
