Dolce & Gabbana has a significant suiting business of which the fastest growing category are those fabricated in intricately brocaded pattern—often in gold and silver tones—or powerfully etched in sequin. Said Stefano Gabbana before the label’s second show of Milan Fashion Week on Sunday night: “We find that a lot of men, young and old and from all over the world, are coming to us for this.”

This show was 90-look broadside intended to double down on the definition of D&G’s exhibitionist evening wear, but also to broaden its scope. As well as evening suits in every variation of distorted polka dot, moiré silk, silk pinstripe, and decoratively baroque brocade pattern that you can imagine—and several probably previously unimagined—there was an extension into opera cloaks, long tailored topcoats, bolero style evening jackets worn under silhouette slimming navel-high pants and some fantastic oversized evening trenches vented high halfway up the spine. One jacket came with a lapel and collar hung with cut crystals that tinkled in rhythm with the model’s stride and the all Barry White soundtrack.

Where parrots featured meaningfully in their Spring 2020 ready-to-wear collection, this one was for peacocks.
