These Brockton-area cops are on the newly released police disciplinary records database

BROCKTON — A first-of-its-kind database containing information about police officers who faced disciplinary action was published on Tuesday by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission.

The POST Commission, established as part of a 2020 criminal justice reform law, was founded to improve policing and enhance public confidence in law enforcement by implementing a fair process for mandatory certification, discipline and training, the commission wrote on its website.

“Over the past year, law enforcement agencies submitted disciplinary records and POST staff has worked carefully to validate these officer records for publishing,” POST Commission Executive Director Enrique Zuniga said in a written statement. “We know that releasing this information furthers police accountability and is a matter of great public interest.”

With entries going back as far as December 1984 to as recent as January 2023, the database contains 3,413 disciplinary records from 273 law enforcement agencies — including Brockton, Bridgewater State University, West Bridgewater, Stoughton and Easton, as well as the Plymouth County, Norfolk County and Bristol County sheriff’s departments.

Reports of misconduct include:

  • Reports alleging bias on the basis of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc.

  • Complaints regarding use of excessive, prohibited, or deadly force

  • Actions that resulted in serious bodily injury or death including officer-involved shootings

  • Truthfulness or professional integrity (misrepresenting or falsifying reports or evidence)

  • Other misconduct (unprofessionalism, policy violations, conduct unbecoming, conformance to rules, etc.)

In the Brockton area, entries range from failing to complete police reports, sleeping on duty and sick time abuse, while others go as far as using the “N” word, sexual harassment, excessive use of force and criminal misconduct.
