BROCKTON − A former Brockton City Councilor is advising residents to make sure they lock their cars after his was broken into. "Be on the lookout," he said.

A West Bridgewater man was found guilty of murder in the 2017 bludgeoning of a 72-year-old West Bridgewater woman "under extreme cruelty."

Brockton boxing champ Kevin Walsh was honored with a city council citation at City Hall on Monday for winning the New England Junior Lightweight title in January.

Former City Councilor Jean Bradley Derenoncourt is advising residents to make sure they lock their cars after his was broken into early Wednesday morning. "I'm just in shock," he said. At around 4:23 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, Derenoncourt's security camera at his home on Midland Street, caught a person "in all black clothing, including a black mask over their face," trying to break into his and his neighbors' cars, he said. "The person tried four cars before they got to mine," he said. "I have heard about this stuff happening to people, but I just never thought it would happen to me."

Brockton teen critically injured, 6 others hurt as fire tears through multifamily home

The teenager who was the most severely injured when a fire tore through the second and third floors and attic space of a Central Square multifamily home Sunday night has been released from the hospital, Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli said. Despite previous reports of the teenager having been in "critical condition," Nardelli said the teen had been in a "more severe state" than the other six people — including five other teenagers — who were rescued from the building, but that none of the six had been in critical condition.

West Bridgewater man convicted of murdering his mother 'under extreme cruelty'

A Plymouth County Superior Court jury found a West Bridgewater man guilty of murder in the 2017 bludgeoning of a 72-year-old West Bridgewater woman, District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said Tuesday. After a 12-day trial, Danny J. Lopes Jr., 39, was found guilty of one count of first degree murder under premeditation and extreme cruelty in the death of his father's longtime girlfriend, Julia Fernandes, who was beaten to death with a fireplace log, the DA's office said.

Escaped emu escaped from its yard in East Bridgewater, captured after chase through Brockton

An emu that escaped from its home in East Bridgewater on Thursday night was back with its owner after leading him and police on a chase through Brockton. Surveillance video shows Mallory, the emu, strolling through an intersection in Brockton while another video posted on social media shows her running alongside a car. Her owner, Lee Flaherty, said a wild animal likely caused Mallory to jump over her 6-foot fence at his home in East Bridgewater.

Good Sam slammed as Brockton Hospital stays closed. Here's what we know.

Authorities say it may be three months until Brockton Hospital reopens on a limited basis after a fire closed the facility. Meanwhile, Brockton's remaining hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, bears the brunt of the strain. Good Sam has 42 private beds in its emergency department. At one point on Tuesday afternoon, the ER had 143 patients, according to a hospital employee with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity to avoid reprisals from hospital management. A different nurse said the emergency department patient count hit 120 last week. "Our emergency room volume has approximately doubled and we stand ready to assist this community by providing access to health care services," Steward said.
