Brockton man who dragged cop while fleeing traffic stop gets six years

BOSTON – A Brockton man was sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 24, in federal court in Boston after pleading guilty to a charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding an officer while fleeing a motor vehicle stop in 2020, U.S. Attorney Rachael S. Rollins said.

Tykeam Jackson, 27, was sentenced to over six years (77 months) in federal prison and three years of supervised release by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock, after pleading guilty last April.

On July 27, 2020, a state trooper stopped Jackson in Avon for "speeding and instructed him to exit his vehicle," a written statement from the U.S. attorney's office said.

But instead of exiting his vehicle, Jackson "accelerated the vehicle with such force that the officer was dragged for several feet and thrown to the ground."

At the time, State Police spokesperson David Procopio said the trooper who was dragged suffered minor injuries but remained on duty that night working on the ongoing investigation.

Jackson then "sped away, drove in and out of a public parking lot where he swerved around other pedestrians and vehicles, ignored traffic signals, drove into oncoming traffic and eventually traveled at a speed of approximately 100 mph in the breakdown lane of Route 24," the statement said.

Federal prosecutors say Jackson attempted to cross all three lanes of Route 24, but lost control of his vehicle and crashed head-on into the guardrail. Jackson exited the vehicle and ran across the travel lanes while fleeing, almost being struck "several times" by oncoming traffic, prosecutors said.

A state trooper found Jackson running into and obstructing traffic on a busy road in Randolph, where he was arrested, officials said.

At the time of the offense, Jackson was on state probation resulting from an armed robbery conviction in Suffolk County Superior Court, officials said.
