Brockton woman's wellness spa brings body contouring and fresh juice to Canton

CANTON – What started as a service Tatyana Joseph purchased to improve the appearance of her body turned into a new business venture, Body By Barbie LLC, a wellness spa.

The Canton spa, which offers non-surgical body contouring, teeth whitening, herbal steams and herbal supplements, detox drinks and Colombian fajas, opened during the pandemic in 2020.

To the owner's surprise, the business did very well in the first year. Ideally, Joseph wants to promote health and wellness through the natural juice cleanses she makes and give tips on healthy eating and working out during a session.

"The juice cleanses really flush out your system and promote health and wellness from the inside out," Joseph of Brockton said.

The main point of this business is to make women feel confident and help them achieve a healthy routine and body goals.

Body contouring is not a weight loss solution or a quick fix like many may think. Instead, clients should change their diet and workout and consult their doctor, she said.

The services are a supplement to a healthy lifestyle change, not a substitute, Joseph said.

Body cavitation is a popular service that uses ultrasound machines to break down fat that eventually liquefies, Joseph said, then, the body gets rid of it through urine, sweat or bowel movements, Joseph said.

Ultrasonic cavitation is considered non-invasive and is an FDA-approved procedure.

"Women come to me when ready to jump-start their body. I give them tips on what to eat and workouts. My goal is to make you feel beautiful and confident in your own skin," Joseph said.

The services' versatility is what attracted many customers to her, Joseph said.

"As a small business owner, you have to do all you can to get recognized. You have to stand out! Having a business is not for the weak. It requires your full undivided attention," Joseph said.

Joseph's favorite part about owning a business is the flexibility of making your own schedule and being your own boss.

The owner loves how if she wants to go on vacation whenever, she could. But then, all she would have to do is block clients' ability to book online for a week.

"I worked a 9-5 until I realized I didn't want to do that anymore. I found something that I enjoy watching and getting done to myself. I saved money from my 9-5. I traveled to take the class, took a month off to plan my business, and opened the following month. It was a success," Joseph said.

"The services I provide are not common up north. Everyone was curious as to what body contouring was. Because of that, I stood out, making my business successful in the first year."

Currently, Joseph is a licensed phlebotomist and will attend nursing school next semester.

Becoming an entrepreneur was easy for Joseph, but she said that is not everyone's experience.

"I suggest everyone get a mentor like I did who can guide you on how to do things the right way. Then, if you want to start a business, go for it. It will be hard at first, building up clientele, finding a location and purchasing equipment, all while trying to keep up with today's rules and regulations, but it's worth it in the end," Joseph said.

"The body contouring community is only getting bigger."

Earlier in the pandemic, Joseph was booked solid for weeks. She had eight clients per day, which drained her completely. So moving forward, Joseph only books half of that per day to give herself some rest.

Joseph said that body contouring is a lucrative business and many people are interested in learning how it works.

Additional advice she gives to new business owners is to focus on your goals and align them with success.

In the future, Joseph plans to be a registered nurse and eventually open a medical spa with more beauty procedures.
