The Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pushed back against panelists on a talk show on Thursday after one pundit appeared to justify vigilante justice at the Kenosha protests by blaming Wisconsin's leadership. "On the argument of vigilante justice, when you have no police around to defend businesses and people who are being attacked and their livelihoods burned to the ground, then there is a void that is filled," Katie Pavlich said. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, of Antioch, Illinois, is accused of shooting and killing two protesters and injuring a third person earlier this week.
The remnants of Hurricane Laura were dousing Arkansas on Friday morning and due to bring rain to the East Coast over the weekend. Now a tropical depression, Laura had proved less damaging than feared, despite arriving in Louisiana this week as one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the United States. The storm killed at least six people in Louisiana, including four who were killed when trees fell into homes, damaged buildings in Louisiana and Texas and knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of residents.
Sen. Rand Paul was surrounded by a group of vocal protesters overnight who he said threatened his life as he was heading back to his hotel in Washington D.C. from the White House following the conclusion of the Republican National Convention. "Just got attacked by an angry mob of over 100, one block away from the White House," Paul wrote in a tweet at 1:39 a.m. Friday. Protesters took to the street in the nation's capital Thursday evening as President Donald Trump gave his nomination acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.
The Republican National Convention aired a video meant to paint the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations as inherently violent, chaotic events, but included a scene from protests in Barcelona, Spain. A public broadcaster in Catalonia reported that the images in question - of fires burning in the streets - were captured in 2019 in Barcelona. The protests in Spain began after a Spanish court sentenced Catalan separatists to prison.
The Chinese Coast Guard has intercepted and arrested at least ten people reportedly trying to flee from Hong Kong to Taiwan during a crackdown on the city's pro-democracy movement. Local media in Hong Kong, citing unidentified sources, said the passengers were planning to apply for political asylum in Taiwan, a democratically-ruled island some 440 miles from the former British colony. The South China Morning Post identified one of those on the vessel as Andy Li, who was arrested earlier this month under a sweeping and controversial national security law imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong in June, and which can mete out life sentences for subversion.
After finding a 13-year-old girl from Memphis, Tennessee, who has been missing for nearly a year, Biscayne Park police and other authorities have possibly found her missing sister and arrested their mother. Biscayne Park Officers Cervera and Schwartz found her after responding to a call about a disoriented juvenile. With that information, the officers asked Miami-Dade police dispatchers if there was a missing-persons call out for a juvenile matching her description, police said.
The execution was scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. (2000 GMT) at the U.S. Department of Justice's execution chamber in Terre Haute, Indiana, using lethal injections of pentobarbital, a powerful barbiturate. On Thursday, a federal judge overseeing legal challenges to the execution protocol by Nelson and other death row inmates ruled that the Justice Department's protocol violated drug safety laws. Judge Tanya Chutkan of the U.S. District Court in Washington ordered Nelson's execution be delayed until the Justice Department revised its protocol to comply with the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, including a requirement that a drug can only be issued on a clinician's prescription.
Most Americans believe the US has handled the coronavirus pandemic badly according to a poll of advanced international economies. US and UK nationals were the only countries to give their national response a net negative, according to the poll by the Pew Research Center. The same survey found that Americans, by a large margin, believe the country is more divided than before the coronavirus outbreak.
Released right before the start of the final night of the Republican National Convention, the Lincoln Project's latest ad, "Decency," calls out President Trump for his mocking of a disabled reporter. The ad begins with footage of the first time Democratic nominee Joe Biden met Brayden Harrington, a 13-year-old from New Hampshire who went on to speak at last week's Democratic National Convention. Harrington's dad told Biden his son wanted to meet him because he has a stutter, and knew that Biden had one as a child.
A Kentucky man traveled to a Canadian resort for some fun during the pandemic. Instead, he got a visit from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for violating Canada's Quarantine Act – and now faces big fines and possible jail time. John Pennington, 40, of Walton, Kentucky, was fined $1,200 on June 25 after staff at a Banff hotel called the police saying they believed the U.S. citizen was violating COVID-19 quarantine laws.
Nearly 40 children are now safe and sound after a two-week operation involving state and federal authorities in Georgia. The U.S. Marshals Service, with help from state police and other local agencies, rescued 26 missing children and ensured the safe location of 13 others as part of “Operation Not Forgotten,” the agency announced Thursday. “These missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions,” authorities said.
Ever since Clarizza Singson appeared on a police hit list of suspected communists, the human rights worker from the impoverished Philippine island of Negros has taken precautions and trained herself to suppress her fears of dying at the hands of authorities. “You don't know where and you don't know when it could happen,” Singson, 41, the regional secretary general of the Philippine rights group Karapatan, said of a potential hit. Singson's resolve was being tested like never before after her friend and colleague of nearly two decades, Zara Alvarez, was shot and killed Aug. 17 on the streets of Negros' biggest city, Bacolod.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's latest ads take direct aim at swing states and Latinx Americans across the country. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is backing the former vice president and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the 2020 election, and lent one of his hits to a new ad for the Democrats. The ad features footage of excited President Trump fans in 2016 juxtaposed with a sparsely attended recent rally, as well as Trump's Bible photo-op and that time he hugged and kissed a flag.
The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee announced contempt proceedings against Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday, citing his refusal to comply with a subpoena for records into his "transparently political misuse" of department resources. The Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives committee, Eliot Engel, also cited a speech Pompeo recorded in Jerusalem for this week's Republican National Convention. Engel said Pompeo had "demonstrated alarming disregard for the laws and rules governing his own conduct and for the tools the Constitution provides to prevent government corruption."
Claim: Says Jacob Blake 'declared he had a gun in the car and was going to go get it' and was 'brandishing' a knife. As we wait for a full Wisconsin Department of Justice report on the Jacob Blake shooting, speculation has run rampant online about whether the 29-year-old Kenosha man was armed — and with what — in the moments before a Kenosha police officer shot him seven times in the back. The lack of detailed information from law enforcement has only added to the speculation.
