BRANCH COUNTY — A 31-year-old Bronson man will serve 18 months to 10 years in prison after pleading no contest to assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence in connection to a Sept. 21 incident in Coldwater.

Circuit Judge Bill O’Grady imposed the sentence on Aaron Allen Monday after hearing the prosecutor Zack Stempien detail the case.

The prosecutor said Allen violated court orders and contacted the victim from the jail using another inmate's account following his arrest.

Stempien said Allen also used to his mother to contact the victim in an attempt to keep the woman from testifying.

The victim declined to speak while in the courtroom for the sentencing.

But Stempien said, “her viewpoint of what has gone on has changed over time.”

The prosecutor said her first thoughts were, “I want to help him. I want to fix it. What can we do to help get on the right track?” Stempien said. “To be frank, then I think she realized what kind of mess Mr. Allen is.”

Stempien detailed the incident, stating Allen “hit her in the face and instructed her that she deserved it. He was screaming in her face” as he split her lip.

The prosecutor added Allen served probation five times and five times failed to complete the probation.

Allen apologized in court and blamed his conduct on his drug use.

“For the last 10 years, when I do drugs, I’m a bad person. I read the victim impact statement where I was described as a monster,” Allen said.
