Bronx gunman gets off several rounds at NYPD officers in East Morrisania, and flees into darkness

An unknown shooter got off several rounds at police officers in the Bronx on Friday night — but no one was hit, and the suspect vanished.

Gunfire erupted around 7:40 p.m. near the corner of Vyse Ave. and E. 174th St. in East Morrisania, said police and a witness.

“There were three shots — pop, pop, pop,” said a neighborhood resident who gave his name as Mike.

A citywide “officer down” alert was sent out from the scene, said a police source. “But nobody got hit,” said Mike, 34.

The officers who were the shooter’s target held off going into the buildings where they thought they might find the suspect until backup arrived, said Mike. They didn’t have to wait long.

“The cops came flying. It was wild out here,” said Mike. “The cops were shouting that he was jumping from roof to roof.”

The neighborhood has several apartment buildings that are around five stories tall and built closely together. Some have parking spaces and wide alleys in the back, and there is a city park nearby on Bryant Ave.

The police turnout included a helicopter and Emergency Services Unit officers.

The suspect managed to escape, said police sources.

He was described as Hispanic and wearing a gray hoodie.
