Bronx tenants file contempt motion against landlord

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — Tenants in three Bronx buildings filed a contempt motion against their landlord over failure to make agreed-upon repairs after reaching a settlement last August.

Those repairs needed to be made within 30 days and more than six months later, tenants are anxiously waiting for the landlord to step up to the plate.

Mohamed Niengadou has lived in his apartment for 13 years. Things have gotten worse in the last five years; his refrigerator doesn’t work.

“Sometimes we have to throw away some food. We have to spend $500 for food and then garbage,” Niengadou said.

Samantha Diaz says they have had plumbing issues.

“We had to call the fire department because our sink has flooded.” She added, ” It’s really hard to get repairs done when the people you should be depending on aren’t responding.”

The tenants settled in August 2023, and the landlord agreed to make extensive repairs within 30 days or face civil penalties. PIX11 News contacted Emerald Equities for comment but has not received a response.

A response from the court is expected in the next few weeks. In the meantime, they hope this motion ends the dangerous conditions they have dealt with for the last five years.
