Hockey: Watertown boys split two games, girls fall to Brookings
The Watertown Lakers went 1-2 in South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association games on Friday and Saturday.
The Laker boys (2-2 in the SDAHA) opened the weekend with 9-0 home loss to Brookings on Friday in the Maas Ice Arena before bouncing back to win at Yankton 8-3 on Saturday.
The Laker girls (now 1-2) fell to Brookings 11-2 on Saturday in the Maas Ice Arena.
Laker Boys
Breck Hirschoff, Jacob Kahle and Owen Schneider each tallied two goals to lead the Brookings Rangers past the Lakers.
Jay Harris, Talon Hyde and Riley Linstad also scored goals for Brookings, which out shot Watertown 37-10. Luke Honkomp had six assists, Hirschoff and Zach Struck each two and Addison Ronning, Jack Merritt, Linstad and Chase Karch each one. Ronning also made 10 saves.
Goaltender Caleb Schmaltz finished with 28 saves for the Lakers.
Mylan Evans, Jake Bramer, Jacob Rieffenberger, Austin McBride, Brayson Bohling, Logan Austad, Trey Allard and Kowynn Muhl each scored goals for Watertown in Saturday's win at Yankton. Tommy Foley, Wyatt Knopf, Jackson Espland, Evans, Bramer and McBride each recorded assists. Schmaltz was credited with 22 saves.
Watertown plays Friday and Saturday in a tournament at Minnetonka, Minn.
Laker Girls
Taylor Hokenson's hat trick and two-goal performances by Sawyer Triplett and Savannah Barber lifted Brookings past Watertown on Saturday. Miyah Foerster, Anna Rssmussen, Taryn Richter and Graciana Peterson also had goals.
Brookings was credited with 18 assists, including five by Kiran Vugteveen and two each by Maggie Dunbar, Julissa Peterson, Barber and Triplett. Goalie Aletha Baker recorded 12 saves.
Janel Lloyd scored two goals for Watertown. Harper Hendricks assisted on both tallies. Angelyn Birnett tallied 43 saves in net.
The Lakers were slated to host Sioux Falls on Sunday. They'll return to action Dec. 17 at Huron and Dec. 18 at Aberdeen.
