A big opening weekend for movies “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in what’s being dubbed the ‘Barbenheimer’ buzz.

“Barbenheimer” fever was in full effect in Brookline Friday night.

“There was laughter, there were tears, it was a whole range of emotions,” Sophie Kagan told Boston 25 News

The night brought big crowds, long lines and a big boom to the box office as moviegoers snagged sold-out seats and plenty of popcorn.

“I did grow up with Barbie,” Kat Lawrence proudly told Boston 25 News.

Kagan said she gave the movie a “ten outta ten, they couldn’t have cast a better couple as Barbie and Ken.”

Rachel Tsupros added the film was, “Incredible, loved it so much. I didn’t expect to cry.”

“The characters, the female empowerment, let’s squash the patriarchy, deep seeded female energy,” Kagan stated.

The Mattel icon was played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling played Ken as the iconic couple get a dose of the real world.

Josh Nyland said he’ll be back to see Oppenheimer Saturday, after catching the Barbie matinee on Friday,

“Living in a world that isn’t the way it should be in terms of gender politics, racial dynamics, capitalism and all that intersection this film addresses all of it in a great way,” said Nyland

Merrill Waters arrived with a group of friends and his girlfriend, “I’m wearing a Barbie shirt and a Ken wig. It’s a lot more becoming on the website.”

Spencer Costigan was festive too.

“I got a bunch of pink stuff to fit the vibe. Went online, got as much pink I could manage. Last night we saw Oppenheimer, it was a real blast no pun intended.”

Mark Anastasio of the Coolidge Corner Theatre said it’s a special treat to watch the film on 70 mm as the director intended.

“70 mm is special. Oppenheimer is going to look fantastic as a film on film in movie house 1,” said Anastasio. Christopher Nolan is such a technician, {you’re] in the hands of a master when watching in 70 mm.”

Costigan added, “Oppenheimer was great, it was a bit of a bummer, it was good, well done.”

Coolidge Corner Theatre saw the largest number of presale tickets ever sold in the history of this theater, dating back to 1933.
