Brooklyn bicyclist dies in crash with box truck driver

A bicyclist was killed Tuesday in a crash with a box truck at a Brooklyn intersection, police said.

The 37-year-old victim was pedaling east on Ninth St. in Gowanus around 7:20 a.m. when both she and the truck driver stopped at a red light at Second Ave. around 7:20 a.m., cops said.

As the light turned green and both the cyclist and the driver continued east, the woman suddenly turned the handlebars of the bike toward the path of the vehicle.

The handlebars made contact with the truck and she was dragged to the pavement before being run over by its rear tires, cops said.

The woman died at the scene. Her name was not immediately released.

The 39-year-old truck driver remained at the scene and faced no immediate charges.

About 12 hours earlier, a 32-year-old e-bike rider was critically injured when he collided with a minivan near Union and S. second Sts. in Williamsburg, cops said.

Medics rushed the e-biker to an area hospital, where he was clinging to life after the 7:45 p.m. Monday crash.

No charges were immediately filed against the minivan driver, who was heading in the same direction as the bike rider when they collided, cops said.

There were 17 fatal bicycle crashes in 2022 — two fewer than in 2021, statistics show.
