Brooklyn man gets 15 years to life for fatal shooting over debt in 2019

A Brooklyn man who pumped two fatal bullets into a sleeping man has been sentenced to 15 years to life behind bars.

Sam Chen, 44, was given the prison term by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice on Wednesday.

Chen pleaded guilty June 9 to second-degree murder in the death of Da Li, 46, in a single-room hotel on 51st St. near Seventh Ave. in Sunset Park the morning of June 28, 2019.

Chen dropped Li off and about 4½ hours later, he was caught on video returning to the hotel. Chen pulled a surgical mask over his face, then went inside and shot the victim twice in the face.

It’s believed Chen killed Li over a debt, law enforcement sources said.

Cleaning staff found Li’s body, and authorities grabbed Chen a few days later at Kennedy Airport, before he could board a flight to California.
