Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Stephanie Beatriz has shared a touching tribute to Paul Reubens after the Pee-wee Herman star's death.

Reubens was best known for the character of Pee-wee, introduced on stage in the 1980s and reprised in a movie directed by Tim Burton as well as hugely popular CBS's children's show Pee-wee's Playhouse. He died of cancer on July 30.

Beatriz, who voiced Mirabel Madrigal in Disney's Encanto and recently appeared in series Twisted Metal, worked with Reubens on 2016 Netflix movie Pee-wee's Big Holiday, in which she played the role of Freckles.

"I'm so so sad you are gone," Beatriz shared on Instagram alongside two stills from the film.

"Absolute legend, one of the nicest people I have ever met. An icon from my childhood, who I was lucky enough to work with in my adulthood. I will miss your birthday texts and your Christmas cards," she continued.

"Playhouse forever."

Tributes for the actor and comedian poured in after the sad news was made public on Reubens's Instagram profile.

"Rest in creative eternity," director Francis Ford Coppola commented.

Sons of Anarchy actress Katey Sagal shared memories of Reubens from their time in arts school.

"Oh my sweet Paul, I'm speechless. Grateful at the same time, for years of love and friendship. You've been in my life for most of it," she wrote.

"We went to school together, Cal Arts. Before I dropped out I spent most of my time with him in his dorm room. Looked like the playhouse. We'd sneak out at night, break into the music [department], find a piano.

"I'd play, he'd sit in the corner listening, loving. Every year Happy Birthdays and Most holidays greetings. He never missed one."

Bravo presenter Andy Cohen remembered Reubens as "the greatest," adding: "No one ever like him ever."

Actor Jason Ritter wrote: "A truly kind person who made the world a lovelier place… you will be missed."

A statement posted on Reubens's Instagram announced his passing, explaining the actor had "bravely and privately" fought cancer.

"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," the message reads.

"Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit."
