Brooklyn U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez Tests Positive For COVID-19

BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez has tested positive for coronavirus, according to her office.

Velázquez, who represents New York City's 7th Congressional District, said Tuesday that she had come down with a breakthrough infection of the virus.

"She continues to experience symptoms and is recovering at home," her office said in a statement.

The congress member's case comes at the likely tail end of a surge in coronavirus cases fueled by the omicron variant.

At the height of the surge, Washington D.C. had become the highest-risk place for COVID-19 infection in the nation, according to reports from the time.

Velázquez's district in New York includes Sunset Park, Red Hook, Gowanus, Bushwick and parts of Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Park Slope, Queens and Chinatown in Manhattan.

In Brooklyn, the coronavirus surge has also closed down the office of a local assembly member and reached Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who is from the borough.

Velázquez said Tuesday that she has had all three doses of the vaccine and encouraged New Yorkers to do the same. Her office included a link of resources for vaccines and testing sites in the city.
