Classic Brookside is finally returning to our screens – but there's a twist.

The Channel 4 soap came to an end in 2003 after 21 years on screen, but viewers will soon have the chance to watch some of their favourite episodes all over again when the soap arrives on BritBox later this year.

The BBC and ITV streaming service has announced that it will feature select episodes of the Liverpool-based series on its SoapBox section, beginning in July.

Classic episodes of Crossroads and Take The High Road will also be made available.

As well as airing the first-ever pre-watershed lesbian kiss on British television, Brookside explored hard-hitting topics including incest, drug addiction and rape.

News of its availability on BritBox follows on from the release of the show's 30th anniversary DVD Brookside: Most Memorable Moments (30th Anniversary Edition) in 2012.

Speaking previously to Digital Spy, Brookside star Claire Sweeney shared her belief that the soap should never have been decommissioned.

"It was groundbreaking drama," the Lindsey Corkhill actress said.

"You get new controllers who come in who want to make their name and it got dropped, which was such a shame."

She added: "[Creator] Phil Redmond – he was fantastic. His work and the team of writers he had on board, like Jimmy McGovern. And wonderful actors and writers on board. I'm so proud to have been part of it."

Select episodes of Brookside will be available to stream on BritBox from July.
