Brookwood Mayor Joe Barger and the Brookwood City Council are seeking applicants to fill the unexpired Seat 1 position, which was vacated after its occupant took a job in another city.

The city of Brookwood is looking to fill a vacant seat on its City Council.

Seat 1, last held by Brookwood High School teacher and coach Forrest Hudson, was vacated Tuesday.

Mayor Joe Barger said Hudson is relocating outside of Brookwood for a new job, meaning the council must now fill the seat.

Applications for the seat are being sought and are due to Brookwood Deputy City Clerk Tera Donaldson by 4 p.m. on Aug. 5.

Applications and all supporting documents may be submitted via email to Donaldson at tdonaldson@cityofbrookwoodal.gov or hand delivered to Brookwood City Hall in a sealed envelope, according to a post to the town’s Facebook page by the mayor.

“If you desire to serve your community, please obtain an application,” Barger said.

Detailed instructions of the requirements are listed on the application.

Once the applications are in, Barger said the remaining City Council members will review them and then hold interviews for prospective members.

From there, the council will vote to fill the Seat 1 position on the council, which officially became a city earlier this year based on population growth from the 2020 U.S. Census.

The term for Seat 1 expires in 2025.

“We thought this was the most open and impartial way to select the next (council member),” said Barger, who once held the Seat 1 position before being elected mayor in 2020.

He was succeeded by Jana H. Genery, who emerged from a runoff to hold the seat before resigning once she moved outside the city limit.

She was replaced by Hudson, who now is also leaving the Brookwood city boundaries.

Applicants must be qualified voters and residents of the city of Brookwood. Other requirements can be obtained from Brookwood City Hall.

However, no questions about the position will be addressed via Facebook, Barger said. Rather, he asks that anyone with questions to contact Donaldson at 205-556-1300.
