After polls closed on Tuesday night, Paul Battisti beat out Matt Ryan to become the next Broome County District Attorney with 17,705 votes compared to Ryan's 13,971.

In a Facebook post late Tuesday, Battisti thanked his supporters, family and campaign staff for a successful campaign.

"As District Attorney, I will work hard every day to help make Broome County’s families safer by reducing violent crime, and helping those suffering from mental health and substance misuse," said Battisti. "We will work with law enforcement and community partners to prevent crime and use innovative tools to help reduce recidivism."

In a Facebook post late Tuesday Matt Ryan said, "We ran a great campaign and said what needed to be said: tough on crime isn’t working and cracking down harder isn’t a plan for justice."

Binghamton voters weigh in on Election Day

Karen Crisafulli of Dickinson said that voting is crucial, as it allows residents of an area to show their political leanings, and have a tangible impact on their community.

"I think it is important to vote and to participate in democracy," said Crisafulli. "I think voting at the local level is important because you can see results in your community rather than waiting for a big national election."
