A Broome County man who was shot by an occupant while police say he was taking part in a home invasion will serve two years in state prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge.

Broome County Judge Joseph Cawley sentenced Kenneth Hughes, of Greene, to the prison sentence last week, along with three years of post-release supervision, after he pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

The charge stemmed from a Feb. 13, 2022, home invasion burglary at a residence on state Route 26 in the Town of Maine.

Hughes and another man, Brandon Sena-Bruzek, of Montrose, Pennsylvania, broke into the home and threatened occupant Jakev Jackson, who had also received threatening messages earlier that evening, according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Hughes reportedly kicked in a door to the residence and was confronted by Jackson, who had a shotgun.

Hughes entered the residence and pointed a handgun toward Jackson, who fired the shotgun and struck Hughes in the abdomen, the sheriff's office said.

After he recovered from his wounds, Hughes was initially charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.

He rejected a plea offer in November 2022 and was expected to go to trial before pleading guilty to the lesser charge.

Sena-Bruzek was originally charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated criminal possession of a firearm, and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, all felonies.

He pleaded guilty to a single count of second-degree attempted burglary and was also sentenced to two years in prison followed by three years of post-release supervision.
